Unfortunately, most people tend to forget about their health while they have it. They eat poorly, are too demotivated to exercise and live in a condition of near permanent tension, drinking or swallowing a few pills whenever anything goes wrong. It's only when the pills fail to work, that people start to worry and turn elsewhere for a cure to their ailments. Then perhaps even stress-awareness, yoga, relaxation or breathing exercises may be taken seriously, as a measure of last resort. Yoga with Saeed is about self-motivation involving a system of physical, physiological and psychological techniques, which transform the quality of consciousness. These techniques have been effective in defusing individuals stress leading to inner harmony, peace and increased coherence between mind and body. The practise of yoga in my classes is carried out with great care to ensure the safety of all who participate, so that they do not suffer either physical or mental injury. I try to encourage during the practice of yoga sessions a mind which though not 'hyper-aware', a mind which is very focused on the present moment and enabling us to face any immediate problems with clear headed intelligent thinking and with sufficient detachment (i.e. the optimal amount of motivation) to deal effectively with them. Feeling sorry for our-selves or delving into our past are completely useless activities. While we acknowledge that past events may well influence the present and help create present problems, this is only because you allow them to. In other words you still believe similar irrational thoughts and beliefs to those formed in response to events in your past. It is what you believe (tell yourself) now that creates your present unhappiness. To understand the machinery of the mind, remember above all that you alone choose your thoughts. If you think rationally, you are more likely to remain calm etc. and make moderate, sensible life choices, therefore, as far as is humanly possible, ensuring a happy and healthy life for yourself. I am not going to give any fixed rules or methods which will absolutely guarantee that you can live a problem-free life, because there are no such rules, only skills such as you will learn on the course. Once you learn these and begin to persistently apply them you will find that you can reduce or overcome problems, or at the very least, cope with them with minimum upset. |
